It is fairly common to see the occasional hitchhiker near the interstate here in Arkansas. I admit I've never offered to pick one of them up. I do feel really sorry for them and sort of guilty for not giving them a ride, especially in this heat. I don't know how they stand being out in the heat, rain, etc. day and night. I would fall out from a heat stroke on the first day! As a Christian I think we should help out our fellow man, but I just don't believe God would want me to risk my or my families' safety by picking up a complete stranger!!! No way! I can't be the only one who feels that way, but apparently some people are willing to give strangers a ride because the hitchhikers are gone next time I pass through the area. Which leads me to my question: Do you give strangers rides? I'm not talking about when a family's car has obviously broken down. I have helped in those cases. I'm talking about real hitchhikers on the side of the road, holding a cardboard sign, sitting on their duffel bag. Yes, it's survey time again.... |
